In 2023, the “The Satanic Temple” applied for and received permission to put up a satanic display in the Iowa Capitol. Brad Sherman was the lead voice fighting against this display, arguing that it had no constitutional right to be there and called for its removal. There was public outrage, but no one who was in a position to remove it acted. It was not removed.

The next year (2024) the director of the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) changed the rules claiming it would help address the issue. But the new rules effectively blocked longstanding Christian events, and made it very difficult for good organizations to continue their work. Then, as 2024 drew near a close the Satanic Temple applied again, and their event was placed on the official calendar. There was once again a public outcry and after public pressure, the Satanic Temple’s application was denied by the DAS a few days before it was to happen.
